"So supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light - and I think you said that hasn't been checked, but you're going to test it - and then I said suppose you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way.. And I think you said you're going to test that, too. Sounds interesting."

Some of you may remember the above quote. Last Thursday, President Trump gave a press conference in which he speculated about using ultraviolet (UV) light to treat COVID-19. His suggestion brought laughter and criticism from the media along with humorous internet cartoons intended to disparage the President's statement. The following day, Mr. Trump 'walked back' his suggestion, claiming it was meant to simply be sarcastic. But in an incredible case of serendipity, several Israeli medical institutions announced their use of UV light to battle the coronavirus.

Mayanei Hayeshua Medical Center in Bnei Brak is located in the center of Israel. Three weeks ago, the city of Bnei Brak was completely isolated from the rest of the country on account of the fact that some 38% of its 200,000 residents were infected with the CV. (Breaking Israel News, 04/27). This center has been using a UV producing system to sterilize and disinfect its facility. The specific UV wavelength employed is extremely hostile to the CV and has been used for purification of operating hospital rooms for years. It has now been found to be deadly to the CV existing in droplets. The UV producing system was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and is currently being installed in the Yitzhak Shamir Medical Center and others around the country. A new robotic system is being currently tested to see whether UV light can be used to rapidly sterilize passenger aircraft.

I am encouraged by the latest news coming from many parts of the world confirming the reduction rates in both the number of CV cases and deaths. I am also encouraged by the major medical inroads that several countries have made to fight this plague. In fact, since the US, Europe and Israel are either presently in the trial phases of a viable vaccine or will soon be, it is reasonable to assume that one will be made available for global use by the end of this year or early 2021.

May our great God provide us with the technological innovations needed to successfully combat the deadly plague sweeping through our world. Will our President and physicists who are knowledgeable about the health effects of various light waves have the last laugh? Just a thought!
